Soane creates heirloom furniture. They work with blacksmiths, silversmiths, chair makers, saddlers and rattan weavers, who have been perfecting their art over generations and their previous clients include Mick Jagger and the late Duke of Edinburgh, so you’re in good company!

PLANET

Although they’re not there yet, Soane are aiming to reach Net Zero carbon emissions from all their controlled assets (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030. They’ve got clear targets for these scopes and measuring Scope 3 emissions, and for the certification of all their materials. They’re also working to minimise the use of all chemicals and eradicate the use of potentially harmful chemicals, preferably by sourcing from organic farmers and processors where possible.

PEOPLE

Soane are an accredited Living Wage employer, and have a Work From Home policy and skills workshops for their employees. They’ve also partnered with the V&A Museum to establish and fund scholarships and grants to students, early career researchers and emerging practitioners working anywhere in the world on any aspect of Asian or African textiles and dress. Soane has done work with the Wild Camel Protection Foundation (WCPF), the cancer charity Maggies and  Threads of Hope, a charitable organisation that trains Egyptian and refugee women in the art of embroidery. They also sponsor several museums and exhibitions.

ANIMALS

Soane are working to ensure all feathers and  down are certified as non-live plucked, and are looking to source recycled feathers and down.  Meanwhile, they are working to meet the Responsible Down Standard. About a third of their leathers are sourced from a tannery in Spain with a Gold rating and contain no chromium-based dyes, and they aim to make that 100% by 2026.

BUSINESS

Soane have a fair amount of information about their sustainability work and goals on their website, with a targeted plan of when they’re going to arrive at different stages, although we’d love to see an annual impact report, verified by a third party, to audit their progress.
