PLANET
Smol are working with all their suppliers to reduce their carbon footprint, including reviewing energy sources, product formulations and transport. They are the only detergent brand to have conducted a full life cycle analysis by an independent sustainability consultancy (Eloop). When comparing their capsules to the benchmark product across all areas (from ingredients, to usage and waste) Smol generated 13% less carbon per capsule. Smol is certified microplastic-free. But like many other mainstream brands its dishwasher tablets contain a liquid polymer (acrylic copolymer), which the campaigning organisation The Plastic Soup Foundation says is poorly biodegradable. We would love to see more information on their scope 1,2 and 3 emissions as well as their plans on when and how they aim to become Net Zero.
PEOPLE
Smol provides an inclusive and safe work environment for all their employees. They are flexible and allow remote working. They also pay their employees to take volunteer days off, as they believe in giving back to the community.
ANIMALS
Smol are certified by Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International, meaning that they do not harm animals.
BUSINESS
Smol’s bottles can be returned for refill. As well as this, they donate products for those in need of clean clothes, including projects with primary schools and homeless organisations. As a next step, we would love to see an annual impact report from smol in order to understand more about their sustainability policies and practices.
