PLANET
Sheep Inc. are carbon negative certified by Carbon Footprint. They ship everything by sea (the most environmentally friendly way) and are even looking at shipping powered by sail. They source all their wool from regenerative sheep farms which they say sequester more CO2 from the atmosphere than their operations emit and they invest 5% of their revenue in biodiversity projects to ensure additional positive impact. To treat their yarn they use a technology called Eternity X-Care which increases durability and uses no chlorine or harmful chemicals - certified by both Bluesign and Oekotex.
PEOPLE
Based in New Zealand, we assume they adhere to the employment regulations there. They include specific statements about pursuing diversity on their website, although we’d love to see some concrete evidence of this. Charity-wise, they donate 3% of revenue towards regenerate the land their sheep are farmed on and protecting the indigenous creatures that inhabit it.
ANIMALS
Sheep Inc. are ZQ qualified - a merino wool certification that looks at animal welfare and environmental standards, meaning the sheep are non-mulesed and all auditing is done by third party services. All knitwear even comes with updates and information from a sheep adoptee, which lives on the same New Zealand farm the wool used to make your knit came from.
BUSINESS
We’re impressed by Sheep Inc.’s transparency. Their Life Cycle Assessment Reports are very detailed, and they are clearly measuring and reporting on their emissions while always looking to improve them. They are moving towards circularity, using 100% recycled cotton, and offering a life-long guarantee. You can even send your jumper to their sweater clinic if it needs a few stitches or to get back into shape. And, once it’s worn out, it’s 100% biodegradable.
