PLANET
Seventy + Mochi only use yarns from their own mills, meaning traceability is at the forefront. They often use recycled cotton, saving 98% of the energy used and 100% of the water and when it’s not recycled it’s organic. There is nothing on their website on their carbon emissions and their plans for Net Zero and we’d like to see what they are doing in this department.
PEOPLE
Seventy + Mochi are certified to SA 8000 Standard, covering forced and child labour, they pay all their staff a living wage and aim to champion women and marginalised communities by providing unbiased, equal employment and collaborating with female entrepreneurs and social enterprises.
BUSINESS
Seventy + Mochi are certified left right and centre. They’ve got the Global Organic Textile Standard and the Organic Content Standard for their fabrics, the Global Recycled Standard and Recycled Claim Standard to back up their recycling and the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ all the way to Gold.
They’re also circularity-focused, which we love. They’re a part of the jeans redesign project, an initiative launched by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation to tackle waste and pollution associated with conventional jeans production. Their denim and non denim off cuts are redesigned into the collection to create their limited edition patchwork pieces while any unusable waste is sent to their cotton recycling plant to be re-engineered to make new yarn for our denim production. We are surprised that their Circle Back initiative sends spent jeans to Thrift+ and does not recycle them into their production line. We’d also like to see an impact report detailing all their sustainability policies and looking at their carbon emissions.
