Ethical Silk Company

Pamper time? We love Ethical Silk Company’s mulberry silk PJs, eye-masks and pillow cases, with a texture like fine linen, particularly as the silk pillows stop hair breakage aka the dreaded bed head.

PLANET

The Ethical Silk Company only create a small amount of stock and are conscious about their carbon footprint. However, we would like to see more information on what they are doing to track and reduce their emissions. They use low impact, AZO free dyes. All water used is treated and recycled and a water filtration system removes the dye residue, meaning the wash water can be recycled and reused for fabric washing.

PEOPLE

The Ethical Silk Company products are designed in Ireland and made in Fairtrade tailoring unit Mehera Shaw, located in Jaipur, India. The founder visits the unit regularly to ensure that the standards or worker welfare are high. Mehera Shaw also supports a women's group through its Foundation development project. They also give 10% of profits to Jeevan Jyothi AIDS Centre, and Focus Ireland, a homelessness charity.

ANIMALS

The silk comes from a mulberry silk production that extracts the silk from the cocoon after the moth has left the cocoon.

BUSINESS

The Ethical Silk Company are doing good work in the philanthropy sphere and are conscious in the way that they produce their bed-wear. We’d love to see more on how they are reducing their carbon emissions and what their plans are around this.
