PLANET
Allbirds track and report their scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, providing a life-cycle assessment of each of their shoes on their respective product pages. They offset their emissions through supporting projects that preserve Brazilian rainforests, financially support farmers to improve soil health, and fund the generation of renewable electricity in India, and have been certified carbon neutral by Climate Neutral. Allbirds are committed to drastically reducing their carbon footprint to ‘near zero’ by 2030, and are well on their way with their plans to cut it in half by 2025.
PEOPLE
Allbirds are based in California, and therefore we assume they adhere to US employment regulations. They monitor their producers through audits to ensure that employees are not overworked, are paid on time, and that there are adequate health and safety measures in place.
ANIMALS
Allbirds work with organisations like ZQ Merino to ensure that their wool is held to high standards of animal welfare. The wool that they use is free range and mulesing-free.
BUSINESS
Allbirds mostly use natural materials with environmental certifications, such as Tencel Lyocell, for their shoes, but use some recycled synthetic material for their laces and to increase durability. Their packaging is made from 90% recycled cardboard. Allbirds are currently aiming to eliminate manufacturing waste and reduce the amount of material they use through redesigning their packaging. They have also partnered with The New Zealand Merino Company and Made For Good to track farm-level emissions data, and plan to use this to see where they can reduce emissions across their wool farms in the future. As a next step, we would like to see Allbirds provide more information on how they support their employees.
