Dominic Jones’ 6 favourite sustainable staples

Dominic Jones is the Creative Director of the ground-breaking jewellery company, 886 By The Royal Mint. The multi-award winning jeweller is the creative eye transforming gold and silver reclaimed from electronic waste and discarded x-ray films into discreetly luxurious jewellery. We caught up with him to find out the 6 sustainable items he can’t live without.

Dominic Jones has been a pioneer throughout his career - with his distinctive, cutting-edge jewellery sought after by fashion industry insiders from Karl Lagerfield to Beyoncè - so it’s no surprise he’s been chosen as the first Creative Director for the thousand-year-old Royal Mint’s first ever jewellery brand.

With 7% of the world’s gold estimated to be in drawers and under our beds in our old phones and lap tops, 886 by the Royal Mint is the ultimate circular jewellery company, transforming this e-waste into timeless, heritage jewellery.

Dominic has a life-long passion for environmentalism, and is ambassador for the conservation charity The World Land Trust, so he leapt at the chance of working with Britain’s oldest maker to give it a thoroughly modern make-over.

So what are the sustainable staples that Dominic can’t live without? Our founder, Lucy, caught up with him to find out.

1 Haeckels Natural Skin Care & Wild Fragrance

I love Haeckels for bathroom products. It’s an amazing brand, founded in Margate, that uses interesting natural products from sustainable sources inspired by, and from, the ocean. I use their hand soap in refillable glass bottles. They smell and feel amazing and I’m obsessed with the brand.

2 Carbon offsetting - World Land Trust

The World Land Trust individual carbon balance offset calculator is great for calculating my individual carbon footprint, and then offsetting it, so I can work towards being as carbon neutral as possible in my life.

3 E.L.V. Denim | Sustainable Jeans & Accessories

I really like the work that Anna Foster has done with this denim brand. It’s pioneering practices and focus on products which last a lifetime are a really smartly delivered solution to reusing wasted denim.

Dominic’s been loving Haeckels’ hand soap & their sleek, glass bottle.

4 Depop

This is one app I use all the time. I tend not to buy new products for clothes in particular. When I do buy new things, it’s clothes that are more fashionable and not staples: pretty much all my clothes are second hand.

5 Go Gently* by Bonnie Wright

I’ve been friends with Bonnie for over a decade and it’s been really wonderful watching her journey, educating herself and becoming more aware of tackling waste and sustainability. Her book is very gentle as the name suggests and it’s really practical - showing how we can each make action-based decisions to reduce our waste in a non-judgemental, reality-based way.

Planthood are all about eating plants like their jackfruit carnitas tacos.

6 Planthood

It’s a hugely integrated part of my life now. I have it every week and have done so for the past 3 years. They’re an amazing company that I’ve followed since their founding. Using them means I’m not wasting food as everything is portioned correctly. They source their ingredients as locally as possible. It means that as a busy person I know I’ll have healthy, balanced meals, so I don’t make bad decisions ordering take-aways. When you have a day of making decisions it’s so much easier to get home and have your meal ready to prepare. It also means I don’t end up going to a supermarket on the way home and making unsustainable decisions, just for the convenience.
