PLANET
As bamboo is excellent at storing carbon, its use in Zao’s products results in them having a reduced carbon footprint. Whilst they do not have an impact report, Zao’s website indicates they are continuously updating their packaging: they introduced bamboo pouches and discontinued them when customer feedback indicated they were not being reused as intended, and they also moved away from glass bottles due to their higher carbon footprint. As a next step, we would like to see Zao report their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
PEOPLE
Zao manufactures their products in France, and therefore we assume they adhere to EU employment regulations. However, we would like to see more information on their suppliers.
ANIMALS
Zao products have been certified Vegan and Cruelty Free by PETA (including their brushes which are made of synthetic hair).
BUSINESS
Zao is involved in a social project with Terre & Humanisme designed to promote food autonomy in Benin through training and supporting women in agroecology. All of their makeup is certified either natural or organic by Ecocert. In the future, we would like to see an impact report from them.
