PLANET
The Real Flower Company promotes provenance and sustainability by growing responsibly on their own farms in Hampshire with sustainable farming techniques and eco-initiatives. Once the British growing season is over, produce is harvested at their carbon neutral sister farm, Tambuzi, in Nanyuki, Kenya. This farm is accredited at the highest levels in social and environmental standards, and 500 locals are employed. We would like to see more information from the Real Flower Company regarding their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, as well as how they plan to reduce these and reach Net Zero.
PEOPLE
The Real Flower Company claims to be committed to encouraging equality, diversity, and inclusion among their workforce and seeks to eliminate unlawful discrimination, while representing all sections of society and respecting their employees.
ANIMALS
Enormous care is taken to contain soil structure and maintain good nature, fertility, and worm populations. Drip irrigation avoids erosion and waste, moreover, roses are never sprayed when in flower – this protects many varieties of bees and other insects. Hives are also dotted around to encourage bees to pollinate, as well as Lace Wing houses and ladybird houses. Biologicals and other techniques are used instead of sprays to control pests and weed killers, whilst guinea fowl and bantams roam free to prevent unwanted insect infestations. The five acre wild flower meadow encourages biodiversity.
BUSINESS
The Real Flower Company is proactive in promoting sustainable flower farming whilst encouraging biodiversity and protecting nature. All produce conforms to the LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) standard, which promotes sustainable and ethical farming. We would love to see an annual impact report, in order to increase their transparency surrounding their sustainability policies and practices.
