PLANET
The Body Shop fully measures, tracks, and accounts for their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, according to the Science-Based Target Initiative. They are minimising the use of non-renewable fossil-origin ingredients in their formulas, as they move towards 95% natural-origin ingredients. Our one caveat is that they are now owned by Natura & Co which is the world’s biggest B-Corp and owns other brands including Avon which is not a sustainable brand. As a next step, we would like to see The Body Shop offset their remaining emissions through a Gold Standard Scheme.
PEOPLE
The Body Shop have created the Self-Love Day, an annual benefit that allows employees to take an extra day off once a year to recharge and do something they love. Moreover, it gave all staff three days’ leave, which it does every year, to volunteer for good causes. In addition, it introduced a menopause policy, from enabling comfortable working temperature control to the adoption of flexible working hours, the measures aim to provide information about workplace accommodations and support for team members experiencing menopause.
ANIMALS
The Body Shop is on track for all their products to be certified by Vegan Society by 2023.
BUSINESS
The Body Shop is a certified B Corp. As a staple of the British High Street, The Body Shop is making sustainable wellbeing mainstream. They champion circularity with the roll-out of their refill stations; they estimate that this reduces plastic waste by more than 25 tonnes per year. The Body Shop release annual impact reports, and these detail the entirety of their sustainability policies and practices.
