PLANET
Montezuma’s chocolate is certified organic, GMO and palm oil free, and packaging is 100% recyclable, compostable Their wastewater is repurposed for pig feed, and they aim to buy cocoa from sources free from deforestation. They have carried out an assessment of their carbon emissions, and have 100% renewable energy for their factories, offices, and shops. As a next step, we would like to see a published plan towards Net Zero, and an offsetting scheme to make them carbon neutral in the meantime. The company has just been bought out by Paramount Retail Group which has no obvious track record in owning purpose-led businesses so we will watch with interest.
PEOPLE
For their UK employees, Montezuma’s pay above the National Living Wage, and strive to do as much as they can for diversity in their business. With their suppliers, they take active steps to ensure they avoid regions where forced labour is a risk, and have stringent ethical, environmental, and food safety requirements all suppliers must pass. In the UK, they work with the charity Children on Edge, with annual fundraising goals of matching the first £20,000 donated by customers. In the future, Green Salon would like to see charitable work in the regions where the chocolate is produced as well.
ANIMALS
Montezuma has a large range of vegan chocolate, but for their non-vegan products such as dairy, we would like to see more information on the welfare and environment of the animals involved.
BUSINESS
Montezuma’s is in the process of becoming B Corp certified. They are encouraging their suppliers to be more transparent with their carbon footprint. Montezuma’s are working to increase their transparency from farms to their shops, and they acknowledge the challenge of this. We appreciate their honesty on this and are eager to see how they progress in this regard.
