The Macallan

The Macallan is one of the most admired single malt distilleries in Scotland. Their barley is cultivated locally, and repurposed casks are used for furniture or animal bedding, making The Macallan a great sustainable choice for whisky lovers.

PLANET

Macallan’s 485-acre Estate is an area of exceptional natural beauty that supports a rich and varied ecosystem which they work hard to conserve. Their production methods conserve water, and cooling water is returned to rivers. The barley used in their whisky has been certified as sustainable and fully traceable to registered UK suppliers. 80% of their energy comes from renewable and non-fossil fuel sources, with a target to be fully carbon neutral by 2030. We’d love to know about their goal for Net Zero.

PEOPLE

The Macallan engages with charities through exclusive Sotheby auctions, donating over £1 million a year, and employees are given four days of paid leave per year to undertake charitable projects.

BUSINESS

Casks which cannot be refilled are repurposed into furniture, or chipped for use as seasoning, biomass, or animal bedding, for example. We would love to see a breakdown of their carbon emissions and find out if anything is being done to reduce these. We’d also like to hear more about their plans to become Net Zero.
